KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

At 25th Street and Paseo Boulevard is the end of two years and nearly $11 million worth of hard work. Now, a lot of people will have some great places to call home.

It's been awhile since the Beacon Hill area of Kansas City, MO was a beacon for anything positive. Thursday's ribbon cutting of the new Beacon Park rental community aims to change that perception.

"Historically, when people think of affordable housing or public housing, they think of, run down, very bare minimum – that's the stereotype," said Edwin Lowndes, the executive director of the Housing Authority of Kansas City. "Our objective is to provide that quality because housing is the foundation of their life."

The project now boasts 45 two- and three-bedroom units with full basements, intercom systems, equipped kitchens and washers and dryers.

"I've been a Kansas man for all my life, but I had a real problem with coming to Missouri. But I can tell you this, once I moved into this place, I didn't even think about Kansas anymore," said Beacon Park resident Terry Carr.

Carr is the president of the Beacon Park Tenants' group, a role he said he takes seriously not just for the moment but for the long-term interest of the residents.

"They want to make sure they have a good element and environment so, if you're going to raise a child and something of that nature, then boom, this is definitely the place to be because we're an actual community," said Carr. "Even though we don't see each other, we're a community where we care about the children."

The development also provides a community center and support services to residents, including after school programs, tutoring and job referrals. Residents can also apply for scholarships offered through the development company.
