The Heritage at Hawthorne Village located in Salina, KS, at the former site of Hawthorne School,
is on its way to becoming a new 32 unit multi family complex with a clubhouse. This project incorporates both recycling and preservation. The school's original precast concrete arched entry way is the new face of the clubhouse. 50,000 bricks were salvaged to be incorporated throughout this project while another 40,000 bricks will find a new home in projects located in warmer climate weather. Steel, aluminum, and copper were also separated out for recycling, while leftover concrete, mortar, broken stone, and brick were crushed and are now part of the new bases of the buildings, parking lots, and sidewalks. Even the old cloak room doors from the school are being transformed into display cases, which will be turned into a memorial of the school to be located within the clubhouse.
